Originally built in 1971, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is an iconic mainstay of West Brisbane. Home to over 360 specialty stores, Indooroopilly is the largest shopping centre for the region, with a total site area of approximately 7.8 hectares. At its opening, it was said to be the largest shopping mall in the Southern Hemisphere.
In 2014, a $450 million redevelopment was undertaken, the first major expansion and upgrade to the centre since 1998. The redevelopment included a David Jones store, a revitalised Myer store, a new Coles supermarket to join Woolworths, and a new outdoor dining precinct. One hundred twenty new specialty stores, including Australian and international fashion brands, were added, taking the total number of specialty stores to 360. In reflection of Brisbane’s increasingly sophisticated shopper, the new fashion wing included high fashion brands like Armani Collezioni, Hugo Boss, Scanlan Theodore, Sass and Bide, Camilla and Marc, and Ted Baker. The addition of the first Uniqlo and H&M stores in Queensland further cemented Indooroopilly as an exclusive fashion destination.
Although extra land was purchased as part of the redevelopment, a majority of the expansion involved building into existing vertical structures, which is where the car park was located. In order to offset significant gaps between levels, subfloors were constructed to create a consistent gradient throughout the mall. High-end interior fit-outs from international tenants elevated and created a premier shopping experience that hadn’t been seen in Brisbane at the time of development. Well received by locals, the value of the asset has increased substantially after the expansion, resulting in a 30% increase in centre turnover.
