Nicholas Street precinct is the visionary new urban heart of a revitalised Ipswich, one of Australia’s fastest-growing regional cities. It’s a place of community, connection, creativity, and commerce. The $250 million project is the most significant transformation to be undertaken in the Ipswich CBD in more than three decades.
Alkot Studio was honoured to win the tender for this major Ipswich City project, writing all of the design guidelines and overseeing all of the RDM work. The multi-precinct development is slated to be completed by early-mid 2022, with various sections already open for community enjoyment. The new Ipswich City Council Administration Building, the Ipswich Central Library, the Ipswich Children's Library, and Tulmur Place have now opened. The restaurant precinct and Eats building are currently in construction. With the community at the heart of the Nicholas Street development, more than 14,500m2 of landscaped public space has been freed up for use. An exciting events calendar featuring handmade markets, farmers’ markets, food trucks, food and wine festivals, concerts, entertainment, and school holiday activities will see Nicholas Street become the beating heart of Ipswich City.
Located just 40 minutes from Brisbane, the Nicholas Street Precinct enjoys access to an immediate trade area of more than 222,000 residents (estimated to increase to 520,000 by the year 2041), ample transport connections and a booming $9.77 billion local economy. This represents a 93% growth in production since 2001, with millions of dollars in projects underway or pending. Over the next two decades, Ipswich is set to cement itself as one of Australia's most exciting economic growth zones.
